There is lots to talk about today and we couldn’t think of a better person to have on air with us. Shawn Wells is here! Bernadette and Shawn were wee green bananas when they started on the airwaves years and years ago. He accredits his popularity and success to starting on the airwaves with Bernadette. Today, we are talking about supplements, Shawn’s favorite!

The FDA oversights with supplements is minimal. There are so many supplement that are out on the market with ingredients that aren’t even registered within the FDA. Unfortunately, supplements like that won’t ever gain attention until someone lands in the hospital. Try to focus on one good company for your supplements. Look for companies that are transparent with their ingredients. Of course we love Thorne, Enviromedica, and Sunwarrior, and Shawn loves them too! Shawn and Bernadette talk about being wary of the over the counter sexual enhancement pills near the condoms at the register. Those pills contain a lot of the ingredients that the FDA overlooks!
Shawn says it makes the most sense to buy the pill or supplement that is more expensive. Shawn says buy expensive so if when you do want to go cheaper one day, you know how a proper supplement is suppose to make you feel. The biggest thing to avoid is proprietary blends. That means that 99% of it could be the one cheap ingredient, and the oner 1% has the mix of the better ingredients. Essentially, you are buying fake fairy dust.
If you are really investing in a supplement for life, you can actually have your supplements tested for a couple hundred dollars. There is a cheaper way though! Call the company and ask for a breakdown of what exactly is in their supplements, and if they refuse, report them. You hold power as a consumer! A good rule of thumb is that if they have been around for 20 plus years, they are probably good. Follow the sushi rule. If you wouldn’t buy sushi from a gas station, you shouldn’t buy your supplements there either.
Ingredients In Supplements
The adverse affect reporting system is public information. This is very helpful for those who are new to the supplement world who want to get their bodies in better shape! Shawn also says to look at examine. Examine tells you all about every ingredient in your pill, so check them out! Bernadette talks about how much she loves “berberine.” The flip side of supplements is that sometimes there’s not enough accountability with them. Unfortunately, that goes both ways, so when you have a great supplement, you have to be wary of what you say.
Supplements are complicated and competitive. Shawn is around to help lay people understand the complicated science! Avoid companies with marketing fluff. More fluff typically means less substance.
Bernadette asks Shawn about his opinion on vitamin D. Typically, vitamins are considered coenzymes. When we look at vitamin d, it sure does help with bone density and increasing calcium. But it is also a hormone! It impacts everything. Obesity, immune system, brain systems and more are affected by vitamin d, so stock up! Get that vitamin D in your body. With COVID, we are seeing that people who have have great outcomes with COVID have had great amounts of vitamin D in their bodies. Vitamin D can increase longevity. We don’t live outside anymore, we live inside boxes, but breathe recycled air and step on carpet. We are not getting the sunshine and fresh air that we are suppose to. At the end of the day, we are animals, and we keep forgetting that!
The cell structure of every cell of out body contains cholesterol. We actually need cholesterol for our cell strength. So much of cholesterol is actually protective, there is only one type that is potentially harmful. Most of the forms of cholesterol are actually protecting us. The cholesterol we get in food actually has very little affect on out bodies, so don’t be afraid.
