We are joined today by three superstar guests, Marc Peralta of Best Friends, Bonnie Cook, and Robin Perry Braun! It has been a full week, but we all got through it! Happy Friday from One Life Radio!

Best Friends Animal Society

Marc Peralta opens the show with Bernadette on a roll! Marc gives us the bad news of the status of Best Friends Animal Society, but then changes the day with some incredible good news as well. The bad news is that a few of Best Friend’s staff members have to stay quarantined and away from the animals, but when a door gets closed, somewhere a window is opened. COVID-19 has thrown the whole planet for a loop, but there have been some positive changes too! We are all a little lonely in quarantine, but with the help of a furry friend, we can give a shelter animal a foster home, and get cuddles at the same time! Best Friends Animal Society has always been known for changing the status quo, and Best Friends is extremely adaptable to change to help the animals and indeed try to ‘“Save Them All.”

Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Next, Bonnie Cook is the CEO & President of Mental Health America of Greater Dallas. She is here to tell us mental health has gone from bad to worse, but there is hope. Bonnie Cook faces many obstacles when treating those with substance abuse disorders and mental illness, the biggest being helping people recognize they have a problem. In order to help those struggling with substance abuse, several different factors that need to be understood to heal. Bonnie states that to reduce stigma, it is imperative to treat our brains like we treat every other part of our bodies.

Belief Systems

Finally, Robin Perry Braun has a Master’s Degree in psychology and can offer much insight on people’s belief systems. Beliefs can lie in our DNA, or even be rooted in our brains from childhood traumas! Traumatic events are archived in our memories and can even be passed down to our offspring. We know from studies that inherited trauma from our ancestors can also negatively affect our beliefs. Very interesting!
