#1287, Tina Bernet Allen, Dr. Jen Myers

Happy Hump Day!

Today we have two amazing ladies on the show! Dr. Jen Myers, formulator of Sunwarrior is here to teach us all about nutrigenomics. Resident fitness expert Tina Bernet Allen is here to talk with us about the relationship between exercising and eating.

Tina Bernet Allen

Tina Bernet Allen talks about eating and exercise. She says to watch what you eat before you work out. A study showed that a 60-minute run suppressed a hormone that causes you to be hungry. A shorter run also suppresses appetite. Many variables outside of exercise will cause hunger. Lack of sleep, for one. Some exercise raises your metabolism which will cause you to be hungry later. If you’re trying to lose weight, do cardio in the morning on an empty stomach and then have a liquid protein shake or bar after. Women need to eat after a workout to keep cortisone levels from going up. If you’re doing a really hard work out like strength training, eat some protein about an hour before. Any type of mild exercise is great for stress levels. Eating after your workout also helps with recovery. She says exercise is not a substitute for healthy eating. Exercise is for health. Find a workout you enjoy. No one should dread their workout. If you can find a partner, great! Workout together to keep motivated. Mix up your workout, too. If you can’t afford a trainer, youtube has a ton of video workouts. Find an instructor you like and subscribe to their page. Another fun tip is to check out the hashtag "fitness" or "workout" on Instagram and find short videos to follow!

Dr. Jen Myers of Sunwarrior

Dr. Jen Myers is a Doctor of Natural Medicine, Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and a Certified Genomics/Nutrigenomic Specialist. She is the Chief Genomics Officer and Master Formulator on two Scientific Advisory Boards focused on DNA-based supplementation. Myers instructs Physicians and Practitioners how to implement Nutrigenomics into their practices to provide a more personalized approach. Dr. Jen is also a formulator for Sunwarrior plant-based proteins and has published a number of articles on their behalf. Today, Bernadette and Dr. Jen discuss nutrigenomics. This is the study of our genes and how we can learn about our nutritional needs. Blood tests tell us what we’re deficient in at that very moment. DNA tells us what we need overall and how we can function at our best. We can be wasting time and money on foods and vitamins that we may not need. For example, one gene can tell us if we need a certain vitamin topically or orally. It can tell you how much you need to take, too. Genes can say if you have a histamine response. You only have to do the test once to know what you need.
