Keeping Pets Safe During The Cold Winter Holidays
Maura reminds that people should use common sense when thinking of this - if you are cold, they are cold. Pets are just as vulnerable to sickness like colds and pneumonia. Maura says that if a pet must stay outside, which is not advised, it should be a raised weather-proof area with the entrance facing away from the wind. Don't skip giving a bath in the winter - make sure if the pet is going back outside that they are completely dry, you can use a touch test or a smell test ( there is truth to the smelling like a wet dog statement ). The added wetness makes it colder for the animals and pets can take hours to dry.Dogs and Cats absolutely need more food during the winter months. The colder they are the more calories they need. Regular vet checkups can help monitor the food intake that they need. More calories taken in = more warmth for the pets. It's important to spay and neuter your animals. It helps your pets live longer and healthier lives. It can help behavior issues and avoid dangerous situations like wandering off or bad confrontations with other animals. Please spay and neuter your animals!

The 12 Dangers of Christmas For Our Pets
Give your animals a safe space during the holidays. Like humans, our pets can get overwhelmed as well! Pets are prone to get out if outdoor events involve the gates and doors to their area. Pets should have a safe space if there are guests over. Dr. RuthAnn Lobos also mentions white noise for pets to keep them calm. The hosts should talk to the guests about having the pets in the area and the importance of having an appropriate interaction with the pet. Make sure the tree is secured. Consider using plastic ornaments instead of glass to prevent breaking. Have the tree in its own safe room or use a baby gate to prevent pets from being around the tree.Mistletoe and Poinsettias are extremely dangerous to the GI tracts of cats! Lillies are deadly to cats. Most people don't know this! If you cat is exposed to Lillies in any form, drive them directly to the emergency animal hospital IMMEDIATELY!
