Today Maura Davies joins us to talk about health tips for pets during Autumn and Fall. Dr. Jakob Vingren joins us to talk about exercise induced soreness, part II. And Shawn Wells talks about the science of breathing.

Autumn Health Tips for Pets

There is so much change during Autumn and Fall seasons, and much of it could be a danger to pets. First, the colder weather blows in. Then, there is all the food that comes with the fall holidays. These changes make pets susceptible to eating something they shouldn't, or getting loose and getting hurt. We, as pet owners, have to be mindful and extra careful during these months to protect our pets. Maura Davies is the VP of communications at the SPCA of Texas, and she gives us the tips on how to handle this.

Exercise Induced Soreness Part II

Dr. Jakob Vingren is a Professor of Exercise Physiology and Nutrition at the University of North Texas. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Today we continue our talk with him about exercise induced muscle soreness.We have all experienced our muscles being sore and tight after a good workout. But, why? What is going on in our muscles to make them ache? Dr. Jakob tells us if muscle soreness is a good thing, also how to know if you might have overdone it in the gym. The build up of lactic acid is what happens when you work your muscles. And then the inflammation sets in. We talk about some great supplements for inflammation, one specifically is from Thorne called Meriva. It is amazing for inflammation because it is made from Curcumin.Dr. Jakob talks more about some of the ways athletes rehabilitate their bodies like for instance, ice baths.  The main takeaway from today’s show is learning why your muscles get sore, and what the best ways are to recover.

The Science of Breathing

Shawn Wells is a registered dietitian and a certified sports nutritionist. Today we go over a little bit of the science of breathing. Breathing through your nose and breathing through your mouth can have very different results. Shawn tells us which type of breathing is best for stress relief, blood pressure, and overall better oxidation. Then we talk about belly breathing and perfecting your breathing with practice. We will continue this topic when Shawn comes back.
