Jared Ramirez and Dewone Bennett

We've got two important and timely topics today. Jared Ramirez of Enviromedica discusses the benefits of sun exposure. And, we continue our series on race with Dewone Bennett. Today we're talking about mental health and first responders. We learn what mental health services are available to first responders. Bennett also talks about the training needed to effectively deal with situations involving a mentally impaired person.

Benefits of Sun Exposure

Jared Ramirez is the CEO of Enviromedica, a One Life Radio sponsor. He is an expert in the science of ancestral health. Ramirez says studies show over and over that sun exposure is good for us and vital to our overall well being. The sun actually helps to protect against illness and is critical to all of our body systems. Listen to the full interview to learn why sun exposure is so good for us and about the negative impact of some sunscreens.

Mental Health and First Responders

Dewone Bennett continues our series on race and bias in America with a discussion on the mental health services available to first responders. Public safety workers experience a broad range of mental health issues brought on by their jobs. They are exposed to death, grief, injury, pain, and loss. They also deal with threats to their personal safety, long hours, poor sleep, physical hardships, and other negative experiences. These experiences can lead to depression, PTSD, anxiety and other mental disorders. Bennett says there are programs in place to help officers deal with their concerns. But, the stigma of mental health issues has an impact on how many workers take advantage of the services.Bennett is in favor of adding extra mental health services and for funding social work and mental health groups to support police officers in certain situations.Bernadette and Dewone also discuss the need to legalize marijuana and commute the sentences of all non violent offenders arrested of marijuana possession. We have more to talk about with Dewone, so tune in on Tuesday, June 30th, as we continue discussing systemic racial inequality and how we can change for the better. And, check out his zoom chat with several of his friends and colleagues as they discuss their personal experiences with racism.
