Why Does My Dog Eat Gross Things?
Maura Davies is the VP of Communications for the SPCA of Texas. Today we talk about something that every pet owner deals with. You come home and find that your dog or cat has gotten into something they shouldn't have. You panic because you have no idea how much they ate and what this will do to their stomachs. Maura gives us all the tips on pet proofing your home, as well as the logic behind why pets get into weird and sometimes gross stuff.
Daily Breathing and Mindfulness Practice
Mo Brossette is the director of nutrition and mindfulness at the Adaptive Training Foundation. He works with a variety of different clients, including wounded veterans. He also does coaching and speaking engagements on topics like mindfulness, reaching your goals, dealing with fear, etc.Today we talk with Mo about how to practice mindfulness along with breathing exercises. Mindfulness is quite simple and does not require a lot of time, but it does require practice. A lot of times people interchange mindfulness and meditation, though they are different. Practicing mindfulness can be whatever you want it to be. It could be in the morning when you wake up you say a prayer, or you go sit outside and have your coffee; but whatever it is, you have to be present in that moment and not think about anything else. Also, your breathing goes hand-in-hand with mindfulness. Practicing breathing techniques can help you get in the headspace you need to be 100% mindful for that time being.
Exercise and Muscle Soreness
Dr. Jakob Vingren is a Professor of Exercise Physiology and Nutrition at the University of North Texas. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Today we talk with him about exercise and muscle soreness. We have all experienced our muscles being sore and tight after a good workout. But, why? What is going on in our muscles to make them ache? Dr. Jakob tells us if muscle soreness is a good thing, also how to know if you might have overdone it in the gym. The build up of lactic acid is what happens when you work your muscles. And then the inflammation sets in. We talk about some great supplements for inflammation, one specifically is from Thorne called Meriva. It is amazing for inflammation because it is made from Curcumin.Dr. Jakob talks more about some of the ways athletes rehabilitate their bodies like for instance, ice baths. The main takeaway from today's show is learning why your muscles get sore, and what the best ways are to recover.
