Jackie Schlegel is back with a recap the Texas Legislative Session regarding our rights as citizens. Author Melanie Gibson of “Kicking and Screaming” is here to discuss anxiety and depression.

Jackie Schlegel

Jackie is the Executive Director for Texans for Vaccine Choice. In just four short years, she took a group of passionate moms and turned it into the epitome of grassroots activism, setting an unprecedented standard for the nation and even drawing worldwide attention. That fledging group of 20 is now a political action committee and educational foundation with over 30,000 social media followers as well as 12,000+ official members who proudly align themselves with Texans for Vaccine Choice. Thanks to Jackie's endless energy and passion, this group is organized with local branches, core members, and team leaders impacting their schools, their communities, and their legislators.

Texas Legislative Session Recap

Jackie contracted Covid at the end of the legislative session. If she hadn’t tested for it, she would have thought it was the flu. The worst part for her was the fatigue and brain fog she suffered with for about two weeks. She also had extreme muscle pain for which she took ibuprofen. She moved her special-needs daughter to her father’s house, but she did pass it along to her other two teenage children.  They were over it in a day or two. We recap the Texas Legislative Session, and it was incredible for Texans for Vaccine Choice. The Vaccine Passport was up for a vote. The passport is a way to show you’ve received the vaccine so you can enter different facilities, events and more. The bill to outlaw passports made it to the governor’s desk, which is rare. He signed the bill making the passports illegal, a win for Texans’ rights. Healthcare workers sued their hospital in Houston because of mandated vaccines. They are losing their job if they don’t take the vaccine. Bern talks about underlying health issues that may cause someone not to get the vaccine, and everyone needs to back off about who has it and who doesn’t. Jackie says that there isn’t just one solution to fix this issue. She recommends workers and students just stop complying and supporting schools, churches and stores that require masks or vaccines. It’s hard, but we need to fight for our rights.

Jackie also touches on the cases of heart inflammation as a result of the Covid vaccine. Listen to the podcast to hear what the CDC is doing about this side-effect of the vaccine.

Melanie Gibson

Melanie Gibson, a black belt in taekwondo, was born in Denton, Texas and raised in Snyder, Texas, where she began taekwondo training at age ten. She has a bachelor's degree in English from Texas Woman's University, a Master of Library Science from the University of North Texas, and an MBA from the University of Texas at Arlington. She writes about martial arts and life in general on her blog Little Black Belt. Her first book, “Kicking and Screaming: A Memoir of Madness and Martial Arts” is available now on amazon.com.

Kicking and Screaming: A Memoir of Madness and Martial Arts

Melanie was seemingly normal on the outside but struggling on the inside. She practiced taekwondo when she was young. As she got older, she struggled with mental issues and an eating disorder. Taekwondo is Korean and is fighting, kicking and self-defense. It’s been mostly a male sport, so Melanie sometime felt lonely, but she was also impowered by it, and was always treated well by her male classmates. Bern and Melanie agree that it’s a great way to gain discipline for both body and mind. In her early 30s, Melanie was suffering bipolar and anxiety disorders and needed a drastic change. Her gut intuition led her back to taekwondo. Depression and anxiety are worse when you keep it a secret. She wants others to know they are not alone, and getting it out will make you feel better. Melanie said that the practice helped her to respond to stress better, handle relationships better and deal with life’s challenges.

We can’t escape emotions. Melanie still struggles with mental illness but she manages her issues and works on them on a daily basis.
