Maura Davies

Strut Your Mutt

Maura Davies is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications at the SPCA of Texas.

The goal of Strut Your Mutt is to raise awareness about animal cruelty in North Texas. The SPCA of Texas' Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit responds to thousands of calls to rescue abandoned or neglected animals, many resulting in criminal convictions in multiple North Texas counties. This critical work continues, even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. To participate, register and form a team at their all new website, gostrut.org, and fundraise to help the SPCA of Texas. Registration for a virtual strutter with a sport t-shirt is $40, a virtual strutter with a t-shirt is $35 and a virtual strutter without a t-Shirt is $25. From now until February 5, use discount code READYSETSTRUT for $5 off registration. All the money goes towards saving as many animals that the SPCA can!

Pet Toy Safety

Make sure you are thinking about your dog’s size when choosing a toy for them. Some toys are great for toys only when owners around, and others are made to be safe when you leave your animal’s side. For cats, beware of toys with long strings because some love to chew and swallow them. Rawhide toys are very popular among dog owners. If you're thinking about giving your dog rawhide chew toys, be sure to check with your veterinarian about which ones are safe and appropriate for your dog. These toys may pose choking hazards, so give them to your dog only when you can supervise them. Many rawhides are byproducts of the cruel international fur trade. For a humane alternative, consider toys made of very hard rubber, which are safer and last longer.

NAC

As a prescription drug, doctors use NAC to treat acetaminophen overdose. It may also help break up mucus in people with some lung diseases, like chronic bronchitis. As a supplement, some people use NAC to try to protect the liver. There's evidence it can help prevent kidney or neurologic damage caused by some drugs. NAC is an immediate precursor to a very precious substance that our body makes. It's called glutathione. Amino acids such as cysteine, glutamate, and glycine are also natural precursors from the food we eat. Amazon confirmed this week it’s in the process of removing from its website dietary supplements containing NAC (N-acetyl-L-cysteine). There is currently a turf war between the drug companies wanting it to be considered a drug, so they can make money from it, and people like Dr. Jonny who want it to remain a supplement that you can purchase at your own leisure.

Healthiest Foods In The World

Dr. Jonny is an expert on the world’s healthiest foods! He wrote the book with the 150 healthiest foods on earth. But he has narrowed it down to 10 for us! One of the best foods that is right in front of us in the grocery stores! Swiss Red Chard! You can treat it like spinach and add it right into your lunches and dinners. Dr. Jonny says there is no one food that is the healthiest on earth. Everyone’s bodies are different. Dr. Jonny brings up salmon and how good it is for us, but Bernadette points out that not all salmon is made the same. Some is factory farmed, and some is wild caught. It really is about quality. Is pizza a top 10 healthiest food? It depends. Not all things are created equal. It is all about good flour, tomatoes, roasted vegetables, and good olive oil. Dr. Jonny says eat more cabbage! Cabbage is packed with vitamin C and can help lower inflammation and improve digestion.
