We hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend! Today, we've got Sandra Noonan, Chief Sustainability Officer at Just Salad, telling us how they created the world's largest restaurant reusable program. And, Dr. Steve Schwartz of STS Health is here to help us navigate through all of the advice and misinformation regarding protecting ourselves in public after quarantine.
Just Salad Reusable Program
Sandra Noonan is the Chief Sustainability Officer at Just Salad, the fast-casual concept serving healthy food at an affordable price and home of the World’s Largest Restaurant Reusable program. Noonan founded ZeroWasteNYC and is a strong advocate for zero-waste living.Noonan says their Reusable Bowl program was born from a simple flash of incite by the Just Salad CEO while building out the concept. His "aha" moment was realizing that disposable containers aren't required to have a fast-casual restaurant. Through his imagination and innovation the program was born and is the center of their mission today. The bowls only cost a dollar, and every time a guest brings theirs in they get a free topping. About 20% of patrons are using the program, and it's growing every day. Noonan estimates they divert 100,000 pounds of single-use plastic from landfills annually. The restaurant is modeled after Zero-Waste living. Zero waste is a movement of people around the world who try to send as little waste to our landfills as possible. For example, we all know to bring our own grocery bag to the store. But, try bringing your own cotton produce bags. You'll save even more plastic from the landfill. To learn other ways to cut waste visit Zero Waste NYC. Safety in Public after Quarantine
Next, we talk with Dr. Steven Schwartz regarding the controversy over Hydroxycloroquine. He also gives us suggestions for staying safe going out in public after quarantine. Dr. Schwartz says that we still have to use common sense when it comes to visiting public places. He believes wearing a mask is the most important preventative measure we can take. Then N-95 mask works the best, according to Dr. Schwartz. He says the six-feet rule is only effective if everyone is wearing a mask, because the virus is airborne. Also, wear gloves when using the credit card machine, putting gas in your car, opening doors at retail and restaurant establishments and anything else high-traffic.Dr. Schwartz believes that when taken properly, Hydroxycloroquine is a safe preventative measure for Corona and COVID-19. The recent reports regarding the dangers have more to do with the health of the person taking the drug, and how it is administered. We only were able to touch on this subject, so Dr. Schwartz has agreed to come back on for the opening of tomorrow's show to expand on the topic.
