What is abandonment?
Dr. Richard Enander talks about Abandonment and Learning to Let Go.Abandonments happen all the time, yet they can have a formative impact on our mood and sense of self. They effect our mood, in that we might become angry and/or sad about our loss, and they effect our sense of self, or our identity, in that they can have us questioning our value in the world.
Abandonments can take on many forms – our own romantic breakups, divorce (whether our own or that of our parents), those we love passing away
Information bias: We know our thoughts much better than we can possibly know the ideas/intentions of others, so it is easier for us to ascribe blame to ourselves
Letting go and moving on:
Recognizing this information bias, and realizing that we can’t possibly fully understand the motivations of others, motivations which by and large may have nothing to actually do with us.
Realizing our real value, and that it is intrinsic and not dependent on what others think about us. This can lead to improved self-care.
Questions
Why do abandonments hurt so bad?
How is it that we move on?
