Chloe Carmichael, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist, best known to audiences as Dr. Chloe, and author of “Nervous Energy: Harness the Power of Your Anxiety.” She heads a successful private practice in New York City that focuses primarily on relationship issues and stress to help high achievers. Carmichael is on the Advisory Board for Women’s Health Magazine and writes an expert blog for Psychology Today. As a certified yoga instructor, Carmichael is truly an expert in both the science and meditation side to anxiety treatment. Her holistic approach integrates a special blend of techniques that have been shown to help people overcome anxiety. Carmichael holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Long Island University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree and departmental honors in psychology from Columbia University in New York.

Nervous Energy: Harness the Power of Your Anxiety

Relationships can be healed. Bernadette talks about during lockdown, she made amends with her first husband that vastly improved her children’s mental health and hers as well. Response prevention technique - train yourself to not run out the door to the bar or to a friends house when you are faced with stress. Force yourself to change your response to stress to make yourself stronger. Highly successful people experience stress too. Highly functioning people with anxiety experience just as much or more stress because they often have more on their shoulders. These people sometimes look too forward and end up in a loop where they start chasing their own tail. Everybody has anxiety and depression. But some people who are high functioning with anxiety and depression sometimes get so focused on things that the reach a tipping point and drive themselves nuts. In that situation, Chloe suggests the “new mental shortlist.” Give yourself a list of 5 healthy mental things to think about instead. Do not ruminate! Don’t marinate yourself in bad energy, you’re not a piece of meat. Your mind can be triggered by small things, and they even can be in our subconscious. Mind mapping helps with this! A Mind Map is an easy way to brainstorm thoughts organically without worrying about order and structure. It allows you to visually structure your ideas to help with analysis and recall. It can help you to understand why people feel the way they feel. Response prevention is behavior based. When you are doing a physical behavior thing like wanting to text that ex, bite your nails, or smoke that cigarette; don’t. You have to keep yourself grounded and control your responses. You can not always depend on other people to keep you credible, that is not fair. Keep on listening for more tips and tricks to manage your nervous energy!
