Happy Thursday!
What a great show we have in store for everyone today! We are so excited for the half, where Dr. Daniel G. Amen will be on! We will start first with longtime One Life Radio friend, Kip Watson!
Dr. Daniel G. Amen
Dr. Daniel Amen is one of America’s leading psychiatrists and brain health experts. He has helped millions of people change their brains and lives through his health clinics, best-selling books, products and public television programs. Dr. Amen has authored or coauthored 80 professional articles and more than 40 books, including New York Times mega-bestseller Change Your Brain, Change Your Life. He has appeared on numerous television shows including Dr. Phil, Larry King, Dr. Oz, The Doctors, and The View.
The End Of Mental Illness
Dr. Amen hates the words "mental illness." Nobody wants to be "mental." Most psychiatric issues are not mental illnesses at all, but rather brain health issues that can be cured. We need to start thinking about our brain as an organ like our heart. If we had heart issues, we would listen to our doctors. We need to treat the brain like it was a heart issue. Bernadette is thankful that Dr. Amen is addressing mental health as a brain issue, and not bringing stigma along with it. Dr. Amen makes it a point to say how bad americanized food has become, so remember to eat clean. There are dramatic increases for mental health problems. From March 2020 to now, suicide incidence rates, depression and anxiety rates have all gone up. We need to ask "how can we manage our brain" so we can manage our mind.Dr. Amen says there is a problem with who is prescribing psychiatric drugs. One would think that a brain specialist would diagnose and treat brain illnesses, but that is not the case. We see more often than not that family doctors, gynecologists, and pediatricians are diagnosing and prescribing medicine for brain illnesses. Dr. Amen says it is so important to see what the brain needs and treat it accordingly. Bernadette inquires about Dr. Amen's preffered way to diagnose and treat brain illnesses, SPECT scans. Single-photon emission computed tomography is a nuclear medicine tomographic imaging technique using gamma rays. There is an Amen Brain Clinic to Dallas in November/December! We are so lucky to be able to have access to SPECT scans here in DFW!Fall in love with you brain, and your body will follow. Your history is not your destiny, realize that you can change.
