Do you have an emergency plan for your pets during COVID-19?
In a recent news article, the Bronx Zoo announced one of its tigers tested positive for COVID-19. It is presumed the source is an asymptomatic zoo employee. After reading the article, we asked about our pets and COVID-19. Does this mean our domestic animals could give us COVID-19? To help answer the question, our favorite animal lover, Maura Davies of the SPCA, joins us. She says that more research is needed to truly know the implications of this case. It will take time to learn more about how this virus is transmitted. In the meantime, you can make an emergency plan for your pets. Depending on the illness, you may need to ask a friend or family member to care for your pet in an emergency. Prepare ahead of time with a pack of information and supplies. This should include your vet records, any prescriptions and doses, favorite treats, vaccine records, favorite toys and blankets, bowls and whatever else is important to keep your pets safe and comfortable. You can download a sample plan on the spca website to deal with pets and COVID-19 at spca.org/COVID-19. If you’re having financial trouble caring for your pets, the SPCA can help you with food and other needs. For information on how to get help, go to SPCA.org
Dr. Terry Wahls on dietary approaches to treating autoimmune issues.
Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor at the University of Iowa and the author of the recently updated book The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional MedicineThe neurology community really challenged her five years ago about touting diet and lifestyle to help autoimmune diseases. Wahls says they are finally coming around and actually promoting diet as a factor affecting insulin levels, hormones, gut health, heart disease, diabetes and more. She says the key parts of her dietary and lifestyle plan includes a range of vegetables and protein. Wahls recommends colorful veggies like beets and carrots and proteins like muscles and liver . Dairy and sugar should be avoided at all costs, if you're an adult. Milk is good for growing children only. We should not be eating dairy as adults. If you don’t think you can give up dairy all together, try giving it up for three months. If you see positive effects, you'll know you have issues with milk products. Her specific recommendations in regard to COVID-10 include extra Vitamin C & Vitamin A, and again, cutting out dairy and sugar. There are organ meat capsules available if you can't fathom the thought of eating liver, try Pastured Beef Liver supplements from our sponsor, Enviromedica. You can take them without a ton of ketchup!Dr. Wahls is always doing research to understand the correlation of diet and illness. She is currently seeking participants in a research study for individuals recently diagnosed with clinically isolated syndrome or relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.
