/ˈempəTHē/
noun
the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Empathy is a huge part of our emotional intelligence. From the time we are around 2 years old, Von tells us that we are aware that we have different emotions than those around us. The 'terrible two's' are a time when children are discovering their emotions and how to express them. It can be difficult for a parent to comfort a child during this time because it is extremely frustrating. But, children learn from their environment. The way that parents respond to their emotions will teach them the basics for understanding and controlling them. The three different types of empathy are: cognitive, emotional, and compassionate. Von breaks down each type of empathy and how each of them affect our day-to-day lives. We also talk about those individuals in this world who seem to lack empathy - where does this stem from, and what type of person are they? We talk about how empathy plays a role into narcissism and those who may suffer from a mental disorder. Relating to others emotions is absolutely necessary when building relationships, and it starts at a young age. This means, teaching children this step in their development is crucial.Von Eaglin
