The Five Love Languages

According to Dr. Chapman, there are five primary love languages that people speak. These include words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service, and receiving gifts. According to Chapman, words of affirmation are the most common primary love language by a small margin. That’s based on the responses of 10,000 people who took the online quiz on his website in December 2010. Here’s the breakdown: Words of affirmation: 23 percent, Quality time: 20 percent, Acts of service: 20 percent, Physical touch: 19 percent, and Receiving gifts: 18 percent A lot pf people spend a lot time finding their enneagrams and how the work better, but they often forget about the love languages and how to speak them back and forth to your partner and your children. So why does it matter? In relationships, people tend to express love to a partner in the way they’d personally most like to receive it. The trouble is that one person’s primary love language doesn’t always align with that of their partner. So while a back rub after a long day at work might make someone who values physical touch feel like a million bucks, the same gesture may not mean all that much to someone else.

Although Chapman's book, The 5 Love Languages, was originally written in 1992, it continues to help couples today, selling more than 12 million copies since it was first published. Before writing the book, Dr. Chapman spent years taking notes with couples he was counseling when he recognized a pattern. What he discovered was that couples were misunderstanding one another and their needs. If you are wondering what your love language is, try taking Dr. Chapman's 30-question quiz to see which love language is your dominant type. Invite your partner to take it as well.
